BBC told to investigate after licence fee payer received ‘threatening’ warnings

Viewer should not have been warned by TV Licensing they might be referred to a debt collection agency, says corporation’s governing body.

The BBC has been ordered to investigate the system for sending out letters enforcing the TV licence fee, after a viewer who had paid the charge received “threatening” warnings.

Its management was told to look into how TV Licensing, the body responsible for collecting and enforcing the £145.50 annual fee, sends out the warnings after the BBC Trust upheld a complaint that a member of the public was wrongly threatened with referral to a debt collection agency.

Missouri woman awarded $83 million in debt collection case

A leading U.S. debt collection agency will have to fork over nearly $83 million to a Kansas City woman it mistakenly went after to collect money she didn’t owe, a Missouri jury has ordered.

Maria Guadalupe Mejia, 51, said she was "terrified" when Portfolio Recovery Associates LLC sought her out in February 2013 for a little over $1,000, she said in a statement obtained by KCUR.

Orcon told to pay $25,000 to soldier

A young soldier’s been awarded $25,000 after Orcon referred him to a debt collection agency, making it impossible for him to find a house for his family.

A soldier who struggled to find a house for his young family after Orcon wrongly referred him to debt collectors has won a $25,000 pay-out.

The telecommunications company claimed Brett Taylor owed $208 for his phone and internet package, and gave debt collection agency Baycorp his personal information so it could collect the cash.

Student Loan Forgiveness: President Obama Signs Student Aid Bill To Help Loan Repayment

President Barack Obama signed this week a presidential memorandum addressing the student loan process for post-secondary education.  Obama acknowledged the need for higher education and its costs. He said the average undergraduate student has approximately $28,000 in student loan debt due to funding their college education. Obama stressed the average numbers, but noted there are students with higher loan debts.
